Fad or Fab? Infographics!

In this edition of “Fad or Fab?” we will be taking a look into the world of infographics.

According to Wiki, infographics are “graphic visual representations of information, data or knowledge intended to present complex information quickly and clearly.”

By that definition, infographics have actually been around for a really long time.  But they really took the marketing world by storm in recent years.  Why?  Because infographics can take what would ordinarily be boring, eye-tiring statistics and data and turn them into something visually stimulating.  But most importantly from a marketing standpoint, infographics have the ability to make the data digestible and reveal something to the viewer that they normally wouldn’t know or care to pour over tons of boring data jargon to find out.

For instance, what “hits home” harder for you?  Reading a standard nutritional chart on how a large movie theater popcorn with butter has 1,500 calories, 64 grams of fat, 850 mg of sodium, 150 grams of carbohydrates, 34 grams of saturated fat OR look at this infographic which shows that eating that popcorn is the equivalent of 4 1/2 cheeseburgers?  Or that eating an entire box (guilty!) of Reese’s Pieces is like downing 26 greasy, fat-packed pieces of bacon!!!

This is exactly what infographics are supposed to do.  Take what would normally be boring, and therefore ignored, information that is actually valuable and can influence decisionsmaking them understandable and poignant to viewers.  Make you realize that you would never sit down and mindlessly eat 4 1/2 cheeseburgers, 26 pieces of bacon. and 108 Tablespoons of sugar in one sitting – so why would you do the equivalent with movie theater food?  It influences your decision.

Utilizing infographics to effectively communicate any data with your constituents is key in helping influence the decisions you want or hope them to make.

So remember, a good infographic:

  • Is visually appealing
  • Easy to read and understand (yes, there’s a difference)
  • Contains poignant information that will ultimately…
  • Influence your viewers’ decision-making
